MAUI

One of Maui's “must do” activities is to watch the sun rise from the top of Haleakala Crater. While there visit the Haleakala National Park. There are an abundance of sights to see, some of which are best viewed from a helicopter available at several locations. To most visitors, a good portion of their time is spent playing in the surf or sitting on the beautiful sandy beaches. If you like to golf, snorkel, hike, swim or watch the whales you're in luck. Some airlines offer direct flights to Maui. If a direct flight is not possible, inter-island flights are frequent and economical.

In the early 1800's this island was a battle ground for whalers with boats anchored off shore and missionaries The Whaler crews were anxious to let off steam after months at sea and the missionaries were determined to minimize their influence among  the local population.    The whalers got so frustrated on one occasion that they lobed several cannon balls into the city.  After the whaler trade waned the island developed agriculturally with pineapple, sugar cane and other crops, such as onions and potatoes.  Cattle ranches flourished as well.

While most visitors to Maui go there for the peace, relaxation and beauty this island also offers many activities, Biking, surfing, and swimming and snorkeling are a few that are readily available. The best beaches for swimming, diving and surfing are on the Western and Southern shores.  Winter months bring a variety of wave conditions with some areas being extremely dangerous because of the size of the breakers which at times, are suitable only for experts and those knowledgeable and experienced with the local beaches and conditions. Have fun but don't take chances with the tremendous power of the waves.

The best beaches for swimming, diving and surfing on Maui are on the Western and Southern shores.  Kapalua is one of the best and safest.
